Fresno State Celebrates Grand Opening of Lynda and Stuart Tresnick Student Union

University leaders, donors and students commemorate new interdisciplinary center designed to foster collaboration and connections among campus communities

Fresno State University today officially opened its new, state-of-the-art Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Union in the heart of campus, between the Kennel Bookstore, the Speech Arts and Music Building and the University Center.

In March 2018, Fresno State University students voted to create a new Student Union to welcome and accommodate the growing student body on campus. Longtime supporters of Fresno State’s mission to support the brightest young people in the San Joaquin Valley, co-owners of The Wonderful Company, philanthropists Lynda and Stewart Resnick have committed $10 million to make this new facility a reality .

“This new space has been a space we desperately needed for many years, as our campus population has exceeded the capacity of the original Student Union,” said Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval. “Together with the Resnicks, this partnership represents A shared commitment to empowering students to use their passions to ignite change in our community and beyond for years to come.”

The Resnick Student Union aims to enrich the student experience, provide students with a greater sense of belonging and a place to fulfill their college education dreams, as a pathway into the workforce. From students, alumni and community members to faculty and staff, this interdisciplinary center provides an inclusive and inspiring experience and creates a lasting connection with the institution, Jiménez-Sandoval said.

“The Student Union Board is delighted to welcome students to the new RSU,” said Board Chair Nancy Campos. “Students now have the opportunity to enjoy more spacious lounge areas, study spaces and a variety of food options. It’s important to provide students with the essential resources and tools they need to learn and thrive with current and future generations of Bulldogs.”

The 84,000-square-foot LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified three-story building offers spectacular views overlooking iconic campus locations such as the Memorial Courtyard fountain, clock tower and water tower. A broad red ribbon that spans all three floors symbolizes the growth trajectory of Fresno State students.

The first floor includes dining and lounge areas, and tours for prospective students and families starting with the Bank of America Bulldog Welcome Center. It also features the new Leon S. Peters Events Plaza, a beautifully landscaped outdoor amphitheater-style space. Named after donor Ruiz Foods, Ruiz consists of three connected meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 1,200 people.

The second floor includes the Reservation Center, Associated Students Inc. meeting rooms, the Student Union Board of Directors, and meeting spaces for student clubs and campus organizations. It features the Student Lounge at Table Mountain Ranch, and Table Mountain also gave a gift naming one of the large meeting rooms on the second floor.

The third floor includes the Student Leadership Space, Club Center, Justice Marvin and Jane Baxter ASI Executive Suite, Ryan and Ashley Jacobsen Associated Students Inc. President’s Office and Student Engagement Office. The Wonderful Scholar Center, also on the third floor, is a dedicated gathering space where the nearly 300 Wonderful Scholar recipients currently enrolled at Fresno State University will receive coaching and advising support from college success coaches. Several spaces throughout the building are named after other generous charitable gifts.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests attended The Ruiz’s inaugural reception and enjoyed fruit and beverages from University Catering, as well as Wonderful Pistachios and Halos from The Wonderful Company.

Construction of the Resnick Student Union began in November 2019. While the building was originally scheduled to open in fall 2021, construction delays delayed the official opening due to pandemic-related supply chain challenges. However, students have been able to enter the building since the trial opened in September. Additional dining options at the Resnick Student Union will open in Spring 2023.
