New teachers at Patrick Henry High School, library makeover and more

On August 29, we opened our doors to the Patriots.

What a great day to see all of our new and returning students come to campus and fill our classrooms with joy and excitement. We currently have 2,609 students enrolled at Patrick Henry High School.

Our goal is to continue to develop our students to be thoughtful, productive, purposeful, honest and curious citizens of the world they live in. At Henley, we challenge each of our students to reach their full potential through our quality teaching program.

This year, we welcomed several new employees to Henry, who are:

· Danielle Castagnola – English teacher

· Alli Mayville – English teacher

Pearla Konig – Education Specialist

Ryan Livingston – Math Teacher

Jennessa Labatte – Math Teacher

· CJ Santimaw – NJROTC teacher

· Jeff Russell – drama teacher

· Michael McVeigh – Spanish teacher

PHHS library gets a makeover

Our library received brand new furniture funded by Prop Z during September and October. We are anxiously awaiting the rest of the shipment. Our library will feature lounge sofas, high tables, café-style seating and new bookshelves. We want to create a collegiate atmosphere where students are encouraged to come to the library to study with their classmates and have a quiet place to read and research. We thank all the community members who voted for Prop Z, which allowed us to upgrade our library facilities.

Academic Labs:

Academic Labs launched on September 27.

Here, students receive additional support from teachers and peer tutors in math and writing. We can help with homework, class work, test preparation, test corrections, and essay drafting, revision, and editing. Students should bring work to the lab. Some students even come every day to form study groups.

Please encourage your students to participate. We will be hosting lab events in the library every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.

Patrick Henry Foundation

The Patrick Henry Foundation is a non-profit support organization for our own schools, such as the PTA, PTO or other school support organizations. The Foundation would like to thank those who have become members for donating to our membership activities. Remember, every dollar raised supports our faculty and student body. On September 15th, the Foundation approved four grants totaling $2,000 submitted by our teachers and our water polo teams. It is because of your donation that the foundation is able to support our biology, physics, theatre and water polo projects. Likewise, consider becoming a member so the foundation can support additional grant requests. If you have any questions, please email phhspatriotfoundation@gmail.com or visit online: patrickhenryhighfoundation.org.Hope to see you every month at 6:30pm 3rd Thursday’s meeting in the PHHS headquarters conference room.

We look forward to the new school year and all the opportunities it offers our students.

Editor’s Note: Michelle Owen is the principal of Patrick Henry High School.
