SoCalGas partners with Reading Heart to host largest ever community-wide book fair, distributing free books to Corcoran residents

Over 20,000 books donated to the community Corcoran Promote education and spread the love of reading

Los Angeles, August 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) and student-run nonprofit Reading Heart and Corcoran City Host the largest community-wide book fair the nonprofit has ever seen, offering more than 20,000 free books Corcoran resident.

“I started Reading Hearts to share my love of reading with other children, and I am so excited that we will be offering 20,000 books at the book fair – one for every resident of Kirkland. This is our biggest event to date, It wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of SoCalGas,” said Danay Ferguson (15), who founded Reading Heart at the age of 8.

Community events are filled with music, games, entertainment, and most importantly, stacks of books for residents to choose from. The first-of-its-kind campaign aims to make books easier for students and promote reading in the Central Valley, where illiteracy is one of the biggest challenges for young students. Every student participating in the Community-Wide Book Fair received a free book and was encouraged to participate in a reading challenge hosted by Reading Heart.

In the weeks leading up to the Community Book Fair, Reading Heart hosted three book fairs at elementary schools across the city, including Brett Hart Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, and John C. Fremont Elementary. Images and videos of these events can be found here.

To make this event possible, SoCalGas donated $6,000 Support its mission with a heart to read and make books accessible to every child. Reading Heart is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) book donation program dedicated to serving children in hospitals and children in areas with limited books. Reading Heart specializes in events and readings in the Central Valley to support underserved communities. Danay started reading minds at the age of eight because she wanted to share her passion for reading and the joy of escaping a good book with other children.
